Sustainable Tourism and Local Cultural Identity

Abstract

Tourism can finance cultural preservation and local livelihoods, yet poorly managed growth may displace residents or turn living traditions into performances shaped mainly by visitor demand. This narrative review examines the relationship between sustainable tourism and local cultural identity through community participation, control over representation, distribution of benefits and protection of tangible and intangible heritage. UNESCO guidance emphasizes that host communities should shape tourism decisions affecting them, while the GSTC Destination Standard addresses cultural assets and living heritage. A contextual chart shows the global fall and recovery in international tourist arrivals; it is not a measure of cultural impact at any destination. The article proposes indicators that pair economic outcomes with resident voice, language and craft continuity, access to valued places, visitor pressure and conservation. Sustainable tourism supports identity when residents can decide what is shared, receive fair returns and retain the ability to change or refuse tourism activities.
